From heterogeneous co-execution to DSAs: an overview of past, present and future research lines
Heterogeneous architectures are prevalent, ranging from supercomputing to handheld
devices. However, the collaboration of devices with different capabilities poses challenges
of its own. This talk will introduce different software and hardware techniques
for a transparent and efficient use of all the devices in a heterogeneous system. Furthermore,
over the last few years, heterogeneous systems have become even more
diverse with the advent of new players. Domain specific accelerators (DSAs) are an
opportunity to tune the hardware to the needs of a particular set of problems, for extra
performance and energy efficiency. A particularly interesting domain to accelerate is
stencil algorithms, as they are one of the main drivers of science and engineering. This
talk will present some preliminary ideas for a DSA for this kind of algorithms. Overall,
this talk will provide an overview of my past works on heterogeneous systems and
current research interests
La Positive and Negative Affect Schedule (PANAS; Watson,
Introduction: Positive Affect (PA) and Negative Affect (NA) have been linked to the etiology and
maintenance of emotional disorders. The Positive and Negative Affect Schedule (PANAS, Watson, Clark &
Tellegen, 1988) assesses these factors, but it has only been validated in general populations, both in its
original version and in Spanish population. Objective: The objective of the present study is to offer
preliminary validation data of the PANAS Trait scale in a Spanish clinical sample with Adjustment Disorder
(AD). Method: The sample consisted of 106 patients (29 men and 77 women) with a mean age of 31.27
years (SD = 9.49). Results: The statistical analyses showed a Cronbach alpha of .92 for the PA and .81 for the
NA. The reliability test-retest was conducted with 16 patients and a coefficient of .80 was obtained. The
exploratory factor analysis emerged in two-dimensional structure, explaining 30.95% of the variance the
factor 1 (PA), and 12.67% the factor 2 (NA). Regarding the convergent validity, significant correlations were
obtained with the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI-II) and the State-Trait Anxiety Questionnaire (STAI-R), with -.63 and -.56 respectively for the positive items, and .65 and .50 respectively for negative items.
Conclusions: The results of reliability and validity obtained are similar to those found in the original
validation. Also the factorial analysis shows the same two-dimensional structure as the original
questionnaire. All this indicates that the PANAS scale is an assessment instrument that has excellent
psychometric properties and allows the evaluation of PA and NA in clinical populations, being this a very
relevant aspect for the evaluation and treatment of emotional disorders
All-digital self-adaptive PVTA variation aware clock generation system for DFS
An all-digital self-adaptive clock generation system capable of adapt the clock frequency to compensate the effects of PVTA variations on the IC propagation delay and satisfy an externally set propagation length condition is presented. The design uses time-to-digital converters (TDCs) to measure the propagation length and a variable length ring oscillator (VLRO) to synthesize the clock signal. The VLRO naturally adapts its frequency to the PVTA variations suffered by its logic gates while the TDCs are used to track these variations across the chip and modify the VLRO length in order to adapt the clock frequency to them. The system measurements, for a 45nm FPGA, show that it adapts the VLRO length, and therefore the clock frequency, to satisfy the propagation length condition. Measurements also prove the system capabilities to act as a dynamic frequency scaling clock source since the propagation length condition value act as a frequency selection input and a strong linear relation between the input value and the resultant clock period is present.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author’s final draft

Thermal resting pattern and acute skin temperature response to exercise in older adults: Role of cardiorespiratory fitness
Background
Infrared thermography is a growing area of interest in sports science due to the potential of skin temperature (Tsk) measurements to provide valuable information from rest to exercise. However, limited research exists on Tsk in older adults and the impact of factors such as sex and cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) on Tsk. This study aims to investigate Tsk at rest and after acute exercise in older adults and assess whether sex or CRF influences Tsk.
Methods
Ninety-two participants (41 women, 68.48 ± 3.01 years) were examined with a thermographic camera in a conditioned room (23.02 ± 3.01 °C) at rest and after a graded protocol. The Tsk of 25 regions of interest (ROIs) were extracted and analysed.
Results
Men had higher overall Tsk at rest in 76% of ROIs, showing significant differences (p < 0.010) in six specific ROIs, independent of CRF. Both sexes had similar Tsk responses after graded exercise, with increases in distal parts (1.06 ± 0.50 °C), decreases in proximal parts (−0.62 ± 0.42 °C), and stable central Tsk (0.23 ± 0.59 °C). Increases in lower limb Tsk were significantly associated with CRF in men and women (β = 0.438, p = 0.001, and β = 0.535, p < 0.001, respectively), explaining 17% and 27% of the variance, respectively.
Conclusions
This study demonstrates a sex-specific effect on resting Tsk in older adults, suggesting that sex-specific Tsk patterns should be considered when analysing Tsk in this population. Additionally, the association between increases in lower limb Tsk and CRF suggests that Tsk could be a promising predictor of CRF in older adults.Spanish Ministry of Economy, Industry
